Best at home core workouts

Assalamu Alaikum, sisters!

So you’re looking for the best core exercises to do at home? Before we dive into that, let’s discuss the importance of what a strong core is and how it will help you.

Imagine your body is like a tree, with your feet as the roots, your torso as the trunk, and your arms as the branches. Just like a tree needs a strong trunk to support its branches and withstand strong winds, your body needs a strong core to support your limbs and help you move around.

Your core muscles are the ones located in your abdomen, lower back, and hips. They work together to help you maintain good posture, balance, and stability. When these muscles are weak, it can cause a range of problems, such as poor posture, lower back pain, and even difficulty with basic movements like standing up or walking.

Having a strong core can benefit you in many ways. For example, good posture, balance, and stability. It also helps us Muslimah’s with everyday tasks like carrying groceries, picking up our children, and even performing prayer movements correctly. Plus, having a strong core can reduce the risk of injury and improve athletic performance.

But as Muslimah’s building core strength isn't just about physical health - it can have spiritual benefits too. In Islam, we are encouraged to preserve our health- Al-Bukhāri narrated in his Saheeh from Ibn Abbās that Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: ‘There are two blessings which many of the people lose, good health and free time.’” (Zād al-Ma’ād, 4/196). By strengthening our cores, we are taking steps towards fulfilling that need and improving our overall health and well-being.

So, how do you strengthen your core? There are many different exercises you can do, such as planks, crunches, and Russian twists. The important thing is to find exercises that you enjoy and that challenge you appropriately.

Here are four effective at-home core exercises for women:

  1. Plank: Get into a push-up position with your arms straight and your wrists directly beneath your shoulders. Hold your body in a straight line from head to heels, engaging your core muscles. Hold this position for 30-60 seconds, or as long as you can maintain good form. Repeat for 2-3 sets.

  2. Bicycle Crunch: Lie flat on your back with your hands behind your head and your knees bent. Lift your shoulders off the ground and bring your right elbow towards your left knee as you straighten your right leg. Repeat on the other side, alternating back and forth for 12-15 reps. Do 2-3 sets.

  3. Russian Twist: Sit on the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat on the ground. Lean back slightly, keeping your back straight and your core engaged. Hold a weight or a household object in front of you with both hands, and twist your torso to the right, tapping the object on the ground. Twist back to the left, tapping the object on the other side. Repeat for 12-15 reps on each side. Do 2-3 sets.

  4. Dead Bug: Lie flat on your back with your arms extended towards the ceiling and your legs in a tabletop position (knees bent at a 90-degree angle). Lower your right arm and left leg towards the ground, keeping your lower back pressed into the floor. Return to the starting position, then repeat on the other side. Alternate back and forth for 12-15 reps. Do 2-3 sets.

As Muslimahs and with all of the sunnah health remedies and quranic healing methods at our disposal, we should have the healthiest and strongest bodies of all the nations.
